GREENWICH AVE

Greenwich, CT

Ralph Lauren

Opened 2009 – 21,000 sq. ft.

The store in Greenwich, Connecticut was built from the ground up and consists of 2 levels of retail at Ground & Second Floors and vast Back-of-House & Stockroom areas at the Basement level. Building on the success of the Moscow Tretyakovsky store, we perused a design based on a synthesis of Beaux Arts elements.

The large, highly detailed limestone facade has two entrances. One for Men’s and another, framed by a grand stone arch & sculpted balcony for Women’s. Once inside the Women’s entrance a large Gallery opens up highlighting a wide range of Accessories product, housed in towering antique silver vitrines.

A grand, sweeping stair, with hand forged ironwork railings leads to the Second Floor Women’s Collection room, a new concept Shoe Salon & various Home Collection rooms. On the Men’s side, a series of columned & beamed halls leads to a grand, baronial fireplace.

P.C. HOOFTSTRAAT

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Ralph Lauren

Opened 2010 – 5900 sq. ft.

This renovation of an existing Ralph Lauren store on Amsterdam’s P.C. Hooftstraat was meant to freshen and enliven a decades old location. The previous incarnation of the store was quite dark, with lots of stained Mahogany wall-cases & paneling, heavy Persian rugs and dark stained wood floors.

The face lift included all new white painted woodwork, new, increased lighting, all new fabric caselining and decorative elements. The floors were painstakingly refinished, bleached & treated to brighten and lighten them. The exterior was also revamped with new display windows, awnings, signage, and a sandblasted, repainted facade. The end result not only reinvigorated sales at this existing location but also brought a new casual & sophisticated attitude to the brand that fits well into modern Amsterdam.

PROMENADE

Gstaad, Switzerland

Ralph Lauren

Opened 2010 – 4700 sq. ft.

The storybook Swiss alpine town of Gstaad is well known in Europe for the high caliber of its residents & their good taste. For this boutique, opened in December 2009, we took possession of a beautiful 17th Century wood frame construction building in the center of town.

While inspiring in its details, the building turned out to be a challenging location for the boutique. Conflicting geometries, reflecting centuries of additions & alterations meant considerable retrofitting & a lot of on-the-spot trouble shooting. In the end, however, we achieved a unique, jewel box-like store that continues to attract praise.

VIA SERLAS

St. Moritz, Switzerland

Ralph Lauren

Opened 2010 – 3400 sq. ft.

This boutique, housed in an 18th Century building in the resort town of St. Moritz was designed to be a modern counterpoint to its traditional surroundings. Sleek white lacquered walls and display cases, polished stainless steel vitrines & cherry wood panels defined the interiors while presenting a tight, sophisticated backdrop to open, arched windows.

The rustic, alpine setting of St. Moritz was alluded to with the use of a rough, tumbled edged limestone flooring & wide plank teak board ceiling. The end result was a refined & elegant boutique well suited to the tastes of the town’s international clientele.

BLEECKER STREET

New York City

Ralph Lauren

Opened 2009 – 2700 sq. ft.

This latest addition to the Ralph Lauren presence on New York’s Bleecker Street originally began it’s conceptual life as a Children’s store. It went through several programmatic changes, including a Men’s vintage & tailored clothing shop, Men’s Black Label & Men’s Purple Label store before finally becoming a Women’s Apparel store. The sketches on this page show the project in it’s Men’s Purple Label phase.

The inspiration for the concept at this phase was taken from the vernacular of the types of tailor shops that existed on Bleecker Street at the turn of last century. I was interested in the ambiance of these old tailor shops where one would come to a trusted and familiar tailor to have bespoke clothing made to measure. The environment would be both intimate & eclectic.

The photos on this page show the look of the final buildout as a Women’s apparel boutique. The original inspiration helped inform the design for this final program as well.

THE PARAGON
